Be an Audiobook Evangelist During “June Is Audiobook Month”

June Is Audiobook MonthJune is still several weeks away, but now is a great time to start thinking about and planning how you can contribute to the June Is Audiobook Month initiative.

Every year the Audio Publishers Association (APA) works to coordinate this promotional campaign – one full month focused on spreading the word about audiobooks to listeners and potential listeners through as many channels as possible.

It’s not limited to members of the APA. Anyone involved with audiobooks – authors, publishers, reviewers, narrators, retailers, librarians, listeners, etc. – can participate, and everyone benefits.

Here’s some background from the APA site:

Every June, the APA carries out a campaign to enhance visibility, awareness and popularity for audiobooks by directly reaching out to consumers. In 2011, over 75 authors and narrators teamed up with publishers to reach approximately 7.5 million people through all forms of social media (adding to the nearly 4 million reached in 2010!)

As a participant in our June Is Audiobook Month initiative, we ask that you speak out to your fans in whatever way you’d like – from a quick tweet to a blog to a weekly audiobook mention, the level of participation is up to you!

How you can participate in June Is Audiobook Month

  • Do you have a website? Add the June Is Audiobook Month logo to the site. (You can copy it from this post just like I copied it from the APA site.)
  • Do you blog? Post a story about how you got involved with audiobooks. Or what they mean in your life. Or why you publish audiobooks.
  • Are you on Twitter? Facebook? Google+? Post and/or tweet about your favorite audiobooks. About audiobook events. About recording sessions.
  • Are you on Pinterest? Set up a board for audiobooks and pin your favorites (not just the ones you publish). Pin photos from a recording session or event.

Note: If you tweet about audiobooks during June, please use the hashtag #JIAM2012

Check the APA site for more suggestions on how to get involved.

Help get the promotion off to a big start

While it’s important to spread your efforts out throughout the month of June, it’s also very important to make an effort to do something on June 1st.

Our campaign lasts for the duration of June, focusing on June 1 as the major kick-off date. We ask everyone to make an effort to “speak” (type, text, etc.) about audio on June 1 to create a huge, coordinated impact across the country, followed by any other efforts you choose during the rest of the month.

Approach this “promotional initiative” as a fun way to “talk” about something you love. That’s the attitude that’s helped this work so well in the past – and that will make it an even bigger success this year.

The idea is to spread the word about audiobooks and build the audience – and maybe earn some visibility and traffic for yourself and your titles in the process.
